Review:
This book was a big disappointment. One I was really looking forward to but wound up feeling totally let down by the time I reached the end.
The plot itself reminded very much of the Caroline B Cooney book 'Twins'. Twin sisters, a popular and an unpopular one, the popular one dies in an accident and the surviving twin tries to take over her life only to find out she hardly knew her sister at all. Its been done before.
While the book was fairly fast paced, there wasn't anything wrong with the writing and storytelling itself, I guess. I just didn't connect to any of the characters. Maddy was your average mean girl, and Ella was supposed to be quiet and reserved. Maddy was a bitch and Ella was obnoxious.
Ella's personality was really grating, and I found her extremely unlikeable. It was hard to feel any sympathy for her. Supposed to be independent and smart was constantly judging everyone around her, and after she tried to step into her sister's life, to keep 'Maddy' alive she whined and whined about who her sister really was. She wanted to play the popular, pretty girl, but hated Maddy's friend, blew off Maddy's boyfriend. Maddy was supposed to have had some terrible secret. But it was totally boring.
And the romance was pointless and dull. It was a little unrealistic as well how once the truth came out how forgiving Ella's parents were. She's realizes that a lot of therapy is needed at least, but its like....eh. Too little, too late. Disappointing and dull.
